External SSDs have become one of the easiest upgrades for speeding up an older computer, expanding storage on a console or keeping backups safe in a small, durable drive. Prices have dropped, capacities have grown, and there are now many similar looking options on the market.

This guide walks through the key decisions before you buy, so you can match the right external SSD to your devices, performance needs and budget without overpaying for features you will never use.

Start with your main use case

Think first about what you actually want the drive to do. Casual file storage, frequent backups, running apps or editing video all put different demands on an external SSD.

For light storage and occasional backups, almost any current external SSD will feel fast compared with an older hard drive. Power users who edit large photos or videos directly from the drive, or move huge game libraries regularly, should focus more on speed and endurance.

Capacity: how much space do you really need

Common sizes are 500 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB and above. For basic documents, photos and a few large apps, 500 GB can be enough, but many people quickly outgrow it. The small price jump to 1 TB is usually worth it for long term flexibility.

Creators storing large RAW photos, 4K footage or multiple game libraries are often better served by 2 TB or more. As a rule of thumb, estimate your current storage use, then add at least 50 percent for growth so you are not forced into another upgrade too soon.

Speed basics: interface and real world expectations

External SSD speed is limited by two main factors: the connection to your device and the internal drive performance. Many modern drives use USB-C, but the logo shape alone does not indicate speed. Look for the actual standard, such as USB 3.2 Gen 2 or USB 4, in the specifications.

For most people, a USB 3.2 Gen 2 drive rated around 1,000 MB/s is more than enough for quick file transfers and backups. Before buying, check what ports your main device has and what it supports. A laptop may feature a USB-C port that only runs at basic USB 3.2 speeds, or a console might require specific formatting before it can use the drive for apps and games.

If you use several devices, consider a drive that includes both USB-C and USB-A cables or an adapter in the box. This is often more convenient and potentially safer than using random adapters that can introduce connection issues or reduce performance.

Portability, durability and design

Most external SSDs are very compact and fit easily in a pocket. If you plan to carry the drive daily in a bag, look for models with rubberized shells or drop resistance ratings. These can better handle bumps and accidental drops than bare metal enclosures.

Water and dust resistance can also matter if you work on location or around spills. Look for an IP rating in the specifications if you expect harsher conditions. For mostly desktop use, a simple, well ventilated enclosure that does not overheat during long transfers is usually enough.

Security: hardware encryption and passwords

If the drive will hold sensitive work files or personal data, consider models that support hardware encryption. This lets you protect the contents with a password while keeping performance relatively high compared with software only solutions.

Some drives come with companion apps for setting passwords and managing security features. Check that the software is available for your operating system and that you are comfortable installing and using it. Without setting up encryption properly, the security benefits will be limited.

Reliability, endurance and warranty

Solid state storage eventually wears out, but modern drives are designed to handle typical consumer use for many years. Because manufacturers rarely publish detailed endurance figures for external models, use warranty length as a rough indicator. A three year or longer warranty is common in this category.

Even reliable SSDs can fail unexpectedly, so any external drive should be treated as one copy of your data, not the only place it lives. A sensible backup plan keeps important files in at least two locations, such as an external SSD plus a cloud service or a second drive at home.

Price, value and when to spend more

Prices change frequently, but you can usually expect a clear jump per terabyte as you move from budget to premium models. Budget drives trade some speed or durability for lower cost, while premium ones focus on top performance, rugged shells or security features.

If you mainly transfer files a few times a week, buying the absolute fastest drive often brings little benefit. In that case, prioritize capacity and reliability instead. Splurge on higher speeds and stronger enclosures if your work depends on quick transfers in the field or if time saved during daily use has real value.
