Power banks are often marketed for phones, but many people now want to keep e‑readers, handheld consoles and compact cameras running too. These devices drain differently, have their own charging quirks and are often used where wall sockets are scarce.

This guide focuses on what matters when you choose a portable charger specifically for these gadgets, how to match capacity and ports, and which extra features are worth paying for.

Step one: list the devices you actually want to charge

Before looking at specifications, write down the devices you plan to top up and how you use them. An e‑reader used on a beach holiday has very different needs from a handheld console on a long commute or a camera on a weekend photo walk.

Note the type of charging port on each device (often USB‑C or Micro USB on older gear) and how many of them you might use in a single day. This will help you decide how many ports and what connectors your power bank really needs.

Capacity basics: how many mAh is enough

Power bank capacity is measured in milliampere hours (mAh) and more capacity usually means more size, weight and price. For smaller gadgets, it is easy to overbuy and end up with a brick you do not want to carry.

As a rough guide, many modern e‑readers have batteries around 1,200 to 1,700 mAh, handheld consoles often sit between 3,000 and 5,000 mAh, and compact cameras vary widely but usually fall somewhere in between. You will never get a perfect 1:1 transfer due to energy loss while converting and storing power.

In practice, expect about 60 to 70 percent of a power bank’s rated capacity to be usable. A 10,000 mAh unit might give a handheld console around one full charge and some extra, or several full top‑ups for an e‑reader.

Recommended capacities for different gadget mixes

For a light reader who only wants to ensure an e‑reader never dies on a weekend away, a slim 5,000 to 6,500 mAh power bank is usually enough. It will add very little weight to a bag and still deliver multiple full recharges.

If you mainly want to charge a handheld console or portable media player, 10,000 to 15,000 mAh is a more comfortable target. This gives at least one full refill and a meaningful top‑up without being too bulky for daily use.

Photographers carrying a compact or mirrorless camera plus an extra device should look in the 15,000 to 20,000 mAh range. That size can support one or two camera battery charges alongside smaller gadgets, which is helpful when you do not want to carry several proprietary chargers.

Port types: USB‑C, USB‑A and older connectors

Most new portable chargers have at least one USB‑C port and one traditional rectangular USB‑A port. For modern e‑readers and consoles that use USB‑C, a USB‑C port on the power bank is ideal for faster and more efficient charging.

If you have older cameras or e‑readers with Micro USB, look for a power bank with both USB‑C and USB‑A. You can then use your existing cables or a multi‑tip cable that covers USB‑C, Micro USB and potentially Lightning if you also carry compatible devices.

Some higher‑end power banks support USB‑C Power Delivery (PD). While this is mainly marketed for larger devices, a PD‑capable port can still benefit compatible consoles or newer e‑readers by negotiating a suitable charging speed automatically.

Charging speed: fast is not always necessary

Many smaller gadgets do not need very high charging wattage. An e‑reader or compact camera battery is relatively small, so a modest 10 W to 18 W output per port is usually sufficient for comfortable charging times.

Handheld consoles can benefit from slightly higher output, particularly when you play while charging. In this case, look for USB‑C PD support around 18 W to 30 W. This is high enough to maintain or slowly increase charge while the device is in active use.

There is little benefit in paying extra for very high wattage power banks if you never intend to use them with power‑hungry devices. Focus on stable, well‑specified output that matches the gadgets you actually own.

Size, weight and how you carry it

A power bank that is too heavy or awkward will often be left at home. Consider how and where you carry it: a handbag, coat pocket, camera sling or console case all set different priorities.

For compact bags, a slim 5,000 to 10,000 mAh bank that is roughly smartphone sized is easiest to live with. Photographers and console users with larger bags might tolerate a thicker 15,000 to 20,000 mAh size in exchange for longer runtime.

If you plan to charge while walking or reading, pay attention to the shape. Rounded edges and a grippy surface make it easier to hold the charger and device together without strain.

Safety features and battery quality

Regardless of capacity, good safety features matter. Look for over‑temperature protection, over‑current protection, short‑circuit protection and over‑charge protection listed in the product description.

Reputable brands usually follow basic certification standards and use higher quality cells, which age more predictably and hold capacity better over time. It is often safer to buy from a known manufacturer or retailer with a clear returns policy than to chase the lowest possible price from an unknown source.

Extra features that can be useful

Certain extras are particularly handy for e‑readers, cameras and consoles. A clear, simple battery indicator, such as four LEDs or a percentage display, helps you estimate how many more charges you can expect on a long day out.

Pass‑through charging, where the power bank can charge a device while itself plugged into the wall, can be convenient in hotel rooms with limited outlets. Just check the manual to confirm the feature is supported and does not overheat the unit.

Some power banks add built‑in cables or a short attached lead. These can reduce cable clutter in a bag, but make sure the connector type matches your most used device port, or you risk carrying extra adapters anyway.

Refined checklist before you buy

Before ordering, run through a quick checklist. Confirm the capacity is appropriate for your devices, the ports match your cables and the maximum output suits any power‑hungry console or camera you own.

Check the physical dimensions and weight against something you already carry, such as a pocket notebook or existing gadget, to ensure it will realistically fit in your daily setup. Finally, read a few recent user reviews to spot patterns around reliability or heat, then choose the model that aligns with your real‑world habits, not just impressive numbers on a box.
