Many people only discover how waterproof their band or ring really is when it fails after a swim. Marketing terms like “waterproof” or “swim proof” sound reassuring, but they hide a lot of nuance.

What manufacturers actually test for
Most modern wearables are tested against two standards: IP ratings for dust and splashes, and ATM/“meters” ratings for pressure. These are controlled lab tests, not guarantees for every real‑world situation.

IP ratings in simple language
For most people, the second digit is what matters:

Water resistance and warranty reality
Most manufacturers exclude liquid damage from standard warranty coverage, even on devices advertised as water resistant. They argue that aging, knocks and misuse are difficult to distinguish after the fact.
This makes your own care habits important. Avoid pressing buttons underwater unless the manual says it is fine, keep chemicals away from the strap and case, and remove the device in hot tubs or saunas where extreme temperatures are common.
